FC Augsburg, founded in 1907, is a professional football club located in the state of Bavaria. Its predecessors were Fußball-Klub Alemania Augsburg and BC Augsburg. From 1921 to 1969, the club, known as "FC Augsburg," had over 27,000 members, making it the largest football club in Swabia, Bavaria. Augsburg qualified for the Bundesliga through the league championship and competed with four other teams in the promotion playoff for a Bundesliga spot. They also earned a place in the newly established Southern Region 3rd Division. In the following seasons, FCA once again competed in the highest league in Bavaria, the Bavaria Football League, which was then the third tier of football in the state.
Augsburg advanced to the Bundesliga as the league champion, and in the promotion playoff, they competed with four other teams for a spot in the Bundesliga. They also qualified for the newly established Regionalliga Süd, the second tier. In the following seasons, FCA once again competed in the highest league in Bavaria, the Bayernliga, which was then the third tier of football in the state.
From 2000 to 2011, Augsburg experienced a period of recovery. Under the leadership of head coach Jos Luhukay, the team had a successful season in the 2009-10 season, reaching the semi-finals of the German Cup and finishing third in the second division, thus qualifying for the Bundesliga. At the end of the 2010-11 season, Augsburg finished second in the league and, for the first time in its history, was promoted to the Bundesliga.
