Botafogo Football Club (abbreviated as "Botafogo", English name: Botafogo RJ) is a Brazilian multi-sport club located in the Botafogo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, currently participating in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the Campeonato Carioca. The club's history dates back to the establishment of the "Botafogo Rowing Club" on July 1, 1894, and the founding of the "Botafogo Football Club" on August 12, 1904, which officially merged on December 8, 1942.
The club holds several Brazilian football records, including the largest victory in history with a score of 24-0 against Mangueira Sports in 1909, and an unbeaten record of 52 matches set between 1977 and 1978. As one of the most important nurseries for players of the Brazilian national team, it has produced 97 international players, 46 of whom have participated in the FIFA World Cup. In terms of honors, the club has won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A three times (1968, 1995, 2024), won the Copa Sudamericana in 1993, and made history in 2024 by winning both the Copa Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, achieving a "double crown."
Ranked 12th in the FIFA Best Club of the 20th Century selection, in 2024 it was also awarded by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics as the Best Club in South America and the fifth best club in the world. Botafogo, along with Flamengo, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama, is known as one of the four major clubs in Rio de Janeiro, and the rivalry with Fluminense is considered the oldest derby in Brazilian football history.
