Werder Bremen Sports Association (abbreviated as "Bremen", English name: SV Werder Bremen), founded in 1899, is a professional sports club headquartered in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, known for its football team. It was originally founded by a group of 16-year-old students who won a football match during a tug-of-war competition, known as FV Werder Bremen.
The club has won the Bundesliga championship four times, the DFB-Pokal six times, the DFB-Ligapokal once, the DFL-Supercup three times, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup once. The team's first major trophy was the DFB-Pokal championship in the 1960-61 season.
Since 2000, Werder Bremen's league performance has been stable, often ranking in the upper half of the table. In the 2003-04 season, Werder Bremen won both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, achieving their first double and becoming the third club in Bundesliga history to accomplish this feat. The team also frequently qualified for the UEFA Champions League during the 2000s.
