SC Freiburg, abbreviated as "Freiburg", was founded in 1904 and is a professional football club based in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg. It was formed from the merger of two clubs established in 1904: Freiburger FC 04 and Freiburger FC. The two teams merged to form "SC Freiburg" in 1912.
Freiburg was promoted to the 2. Bundesliga in the 1978-79 season and competed in that league for fifteen years, eventually earning promotion to the Bundesliga in the 1993-94 season under the management of Volker Finke. In their first season in the Bundesliga, Freiburg narrowly avoided relegation. In their second season in the Bundesliga, they finished third, just three points behind champions Borussia Dortmund.
The club reached the UEFA Cup in 1995 and 2001. In the 2011-2012 season, the team entered the "Streich" era, and under the leadership of Christian Streich, the club finished fifth in the Bundesliga in the 2012-13 season, which is the team's best league finish since the 1994-95 season, and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history.
