Flamengo Sports Club (abbreviated as "Flamengo", English name: CR Flamengo) is a multi-sport club located in the Gávea neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded in 1895 in the Flamengo neighborhood and named after it, initially as a rowing club, and did not play its first official football match until 1912, primarily competing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. As one of the teams that has never been relegated from the Brasileirão, it is the most popular club in the country and has the most social media followers among non-European clubs worldwide.
Since 1978, it has entered a golden period, winning its first Brasileirão title in 1980, followed by the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1981, and subsequently winning numerous state leagues, Brasileirão, and Copa do Brasil titles, being regarded as the most successful Brazilian team in the 21st century.
The club's youth training system, "Eagle's Nest," has produced numerous Brazilian internationals, with players holding significant positions in the history of the Brazil national team. Several players have won important awards at the World Cup or contributed to championship victories. The fire at the training center in 2019, which resulted in the deaths of 10 young players, remains a painful memory in its development.
