Team Introduction

Gwangju Football Club (abbreviated as "Gwangju FC", in English: Gwangju Football Club) is a professional football club based in Gwangju, South Korea. Gwangju Football Club was established in December 2010, becoming the 16th team in the K League.

In 2011, the team joined the K League and finished 11th in their first season. In 2012, the team ranked 15th and was relegated to the newly established K2 League. In 2014, the team finished fourth in the K2 League and successfully promoted through the playoffs, returning to the K1 League in the 2015 season. In 2019, the team achieved its first six consecutive wins since its establishment, reaching a total of 100 victories and setting a K2 League record of 19 unbeaten matches, returning to the K1 League.

In 2022, the team won the K2 League championship, setting records for the most wins (25 wins), highest points (86 points), shortest winning streak (4 matches), and the most consecutive home wins in the K2 League (10 consecutive wins). In 2023, under the leadership of Lee Jeong-hyo, the team achieved 3rd place in the K1 League, earning qualification for the AFC Champions League for the first time.

In the 2024-25 AFC Champions League, the team was the only South Korean club to advance to the knockout stage. They became the first citizen club to reach the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League. In May 2025, Gwangju FC was banned from transfers by FIFA for failing to pay approximately 4.2 million Korean won in transfer fee shares, and due to not being promptly informed of the ban, they signed multiple players during the transfer ban period and allowed them to compete. However, the Korea Football Association did not annul their league results for the season for the sake of league stability.
