KuPS Football Club (abbreviated as "KuPS", English name: KuPS) is a football club based in Kuopio, Finland. On March 16, 1923, a group of men in Kuopio decided to establish a football club, and the founding meeting was held on March 16, naming it Kuopio Football Club. It became a member of the Football Association of Finland on June 28 of the same year.
In 1947, the club was promoted to the top league for the first time, and the 1950s to 1970s marked the club's glorious period. They won the league championship 5 times (1956, 1958, 1966, 1974, 1976), finished as runners-up 8 times, and secured 1 third place. They achieved back-to-back championships in 1956 and 1958, won the title in 1966 by defeating Turku TPS 3-0 at their home ground, Vainolanniemi Stadium, and claimed their first Finnish Cup in 1968, followed by league championships again in 1974 and 1976.
In the 1980s, the team performed poorly in the top league, winning their last Finnish Cup in 1989. In 1992, their record of 44 consecutive years in the top league was broken, and they were relegated to the I Division, struggling mostly in the lower or third divisions thereafter. In 1998, they were on the brink of bankruptcy due to debts, but managed to survive by establishing a limited company, KuPS Oy, and transferring their debts.
They won the Ykkönen championship three times in 2001, 2004, and 2007 to return to the top league, but they were never able to establish themselves firmly. After 2006, they fell into financial difficulties, and in December 2006, investment banker Ali Lahti injected funds to help the team through the crisis. In 2010, they finished as runners-up in the league, and from 2011 to 2013, they reached the Finnish Cup finals three consecutive years. From 2017 to 2023, they finished in the top three of the league for seven consecutive years, winning their sixth championship in 2019, and claiming the Finnish Cup twice in 2021 and 2022. In 2024, they achieved a historic breakthrough, winning the Finnish Cup on September 21 and the league championship on October 19, completing a double crown achievement.
