SC Heerenveen, abbreviated as "Heerenveen", was founded in 1920 and is located in the city of Heerenveen in Friesland, Netherlands. It is a Dutch professional football club. The club has undergone two name changes, first to Spartaan, and then in 1922 it was named Heerenveen.
After World War II, the team won the Northern Netherlands League championship for six consecutive years. The team's key player, Lunstra, led the team to victory over Ajax, where Heerenveen, trailing 5-1 with just 25 minutes left in the match, miraculously scored 5 goals to win 6-5. This match has since become one of the most famous matches in Germany.
The club is also one of the financially safest clubs in the Eredivisie. A report by the Dutch Football Association in 2010 showed that Heerenveen was the only Eredivisie club with a financially secure budget. Under the leadership of Trond Sollied, the team won its first KNVB Cup, which was also the first major trophy in the club's history.
On May 17, 2009, the team won the KNVB Cup for the first time by defeating Twente 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in the final, with Gerald Sibon scoring the decisive penalty.
