Club Atlético River Plate (commonly known as "River Plate") was founded on May 25, 1901, in the Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a team in the Argentine Primera División. The club was formed by the merger of Club Santa Rosa and Club Rosales, and its name is derived from the Río de la Plata. In its early years, River Plate struggled for territory against its city rival Boca Juniors, and after losing a match, it moved to Palermo and Belgrano, finally settling in Belgrano in 1923.
In the 1930s, due to paying star player Bernabé Ferreyra a salary in gold, the club earned the nickname "Los Millonarios" (The Millionaires). Between 1952 and 1957, River Plate won 5 league championships, followed by an 18-year championship drought, until the club began its revival under coach Labruna in 1975.
In the 1986 Intercontinental Cup, they defeated Steaua Bucharest to win the championship, and in the 1996 Intercontinental Cup, they lost to Juventus. In the domestic league, they are evenly matched with Boca Juniors, being one of the top teams in Argentine football. River Plate is known for its attacking style of play and rich honors, and is one of the representative clubs of Argentine football. The "Superclásico" against Boca Juniors is considered one of the fiercest rivalries in the world.
