Wellington Phoenix Football Club (abbreviated as "Wellington Phoenix", in English: Wellington Phoenix) was established on March 19, 2007, and is a professional football club located in Wellington, New Zealand. The club was formed following the dissolution of the New Zealand Knights, with Wellington businessman Terry Seripisos investing NZD 1.25 million in 2007 to ensure the establishment of the new team, thus continuing New Zealand's presence in the A-League.
In the 2009-10 season, the team became the first New Zealand team to qualify for the A-League playoffs. In the 26th round of that season, Adelaide United defeated Brisbane Roar, securing the Phoenix's playoff qualification. Before the 2011-12 season, Seripisos's financial issues came to light, as the tax office liquidated his companies, including the one holding the Phoenix, due to unpaid taxes. He had claimed to have financed through a Swiss institution and later announced a 50% share sale agreement with a Bahraini company, but the funds never materialized. The club was also reported to owe head coach Ricki Herbert USD 100,000 in salary.
In February 2013, the Phoenix team was at the bottom of the rankings, and Herbert resigned. Assistant coach Chris Greenacre took over as interim coach until the end of the season. In May, Ernie Merrick, who had coached Melbourne Victory for six years, was appointed as the head coach, with Greenacre remaining as assistant. In December 2017, Merrick resigned after the team lost 0-2 to Adelaide United, and in January of the following year, Des Buckingham and Greenacre were appointed as co-coaches. In May 2018, former Sydney FC captain Marco Rojas was appointed as head coach, becoming the first coach in the club's history to win in his debut match.
