Team Introduction

Gangwon Football Club (abbreviated as "Gangwon FC", English name: Gangwon Football Club) is a football club based in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The plan to establish the team was announced by the Governor of Gangwon Province in April 2008, a preparatory committee was formed in June, the first squad of 23 players was assembled in November, and the club was officially established on December 18, 2008.

In their first match of 2009, Gangwon FC won 1-0 against Jeju United in the K League, starting with consecutive victories but ultimately finishing the season in 13th place. They were eliminated in the Round of 32 of the FA Cup and finished last in their group in the League Cup. In 2010, they finished 12th, and in 2011, they finished at the bottom of the league with only 14 goals scored, setting the worst record. In 2012, with the implementation of promotion and relegation in the K League, Gangwon managed to stay up with a crucial goal. In 2013, due to the new promotion and relegation system, they finished third from the bottom and were relegated after losing in the playoffs to Sangju Sangmu.

In August 2018, Kim Byung-soo was appointed as head coach, leading the team to an eighth place finish in K League 1. In 2019, the team achieved sixth place with the 'Byung-soo football' style, leading in several statistical categories. After strengthening the squad in 2020, they managed to avoid relegation. In 2021, despite several new signings, the team's performance was poor, leading to Kim Byung-soo's dismissal. Choi Yong-soo took over and managed to secure the team's status through the relegation playoffs. In 2024, Gangwon finished as runners-up in K League 1, achieving the best result in the club's history and qualifying for the 2025-26 AFC Champions League elite competition. The team's K League Young Player of the Year, Yang Min-hyuk, transferred to Tottenham Hotspur, setting a club record for the transfer fee.
