Cagliari Calcio, commonly referred to as "Cagliari", was founded in 1920 and is a football club based in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.
In the 1951-52 season, they won the Serie C championship for the first time and were promoted to Serie A in 1964. The peak came in the 1969-70 season when, under the leadership of Gigi Riva, they won the Serie A championship for the first time, marking the first victory for a southern team in history. That season, they lost only 2 matches and conceded 11 goals, with Riva winning the top scorer award and several players being selected for the Italian national team in the 1970 World Cup.
Relegated in 1976, Rivera retired. In 1988, Ranieri took over as coach and led the team to promotion back to Serie A after climbing two divisions. In the 1993-94 UEFA Cup, they reached the semifinals, losing to the eventual champions Inter Milan.
In the 2003-04 season, Zola helped the team gain promotion, and after being relegated in the 2014-15 season, they returned the following year as Serie B champions. In the 2021-22 season, they were relegated, and in the 2022-23 season, Ranieri returned to the helm, leading the team to promotion through the Serie B playoffs.
