Leicester City Football Club (abbreviated as "Leicester City", English name: Leicester City FC) is a professional football club located in Leicester, in the East Midlands region of England. The club currently competes in the second tier of English football, known as the EFL Championship. The club was founded in 1884, originally named Leicester Fosse Football Club, and was renamed Leicester City in 1919 when Leicester was granted city status.
Joined the Football League in 1894, won the Second Division title and finished as runners-up in the top division during the 1920s. Won the League Cup for the first time in 1964, becoming an early significant honor, and reached the FA Cup finals four times between 1949 and 1969, but lost each time. Experienced a revival under manager Martin O'Neill in 1995, promoted to the Premier League in 1996, and won the League Cup twice in 1997 and 2000. Entered administration due to financial issues in 2002, dropped to League One in 2008, and returned to the Championship as champions the following year.
Promoted to the Premier League in the 2013-14 season, they achieved a miraculous relegation escape in the 2014-15 season. In the 2015-16 season, they stunned everyone by winning the Premier League title, creating the greatest miracle in sports history. In the 2016-17 season, they reached the quarter-finals in their first Champions League match, and in 2021, they won their first FA Cup, completing a domestic treble. They were relegated in the 2022-23 season but returned to the Premier League as Championship champions in the 2023-24 season. They were relegated again in the 2024-25 season, during which they faced multiple investigations due to financial issues and frequent coaching changes, culminating in the appointment of Martí Cifuentes as the new head coach in July 2025.
The team is known for its underdog spirit, and their Premier League title win is regarded as one of the greatest miracles in sports history, representing the 'underdog triumph' in English football.
