Atletico Madrid Football Club (abbreviated as "Atletico", English name: Atletico Madrid), founded in 1903, is a professional football club located in Madrid, Spain, nicknamed "Los Colchoneros".
Since officially changing its name to Atletico Madrid in 1946, the club has been a rival of its city counterpart Real Madrid, and the clashes between the two teams are regarded as one of the most intense derbies in world football, known as the "Madrid Derby". King Felipe VI of Spain has served as the club's honorary president since 2003, reflecting its unique social status and influence.
From 1947 to 1965, the club was coached by Helenio Herrera and László Bénbárék, and won the La Liga championship again in the 1950-51 season. Shortly after losing the European Cup final in 1974, Atlético Madrid signed Luis Aragonés as head coach. Under his leadership, the team made some progress in the Copa del Rey and La Liga.
In 2011, the team signed Diego Simeone, which completely transformed the club. He adjusted the team's defense to create a strong defensive system, winning the La Liga championship in 2013-14 and 2020-21, while reaching the Champions League final three times.
