Olympique de Marseille, commonly known as "Marseille", was founded in 1899 and is a professional football club based in Marseille, France. It is one of the historic powerhouses of French football and is also the French team that has won the UEFA Champions League.
Marseille's journey has been dramatic. In 1993, at the peak of winning the Champions League, coach Raymond Goethals led the team to become the first French club to win the UEFA Champions League title. However, it was later overshadowed by a bribery scandal in the league, resulting in the title being stripped and relegation. In 2010, under the leadership of former club captain Didier Deschamps, they won their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years, marking a true return.
The "French Derby" between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain is the most explosive clash in Ligue 1. Marseille has always been a strong contender for the Champions League spots, successfully returning to the Champions League in 2025. The club has produced world-class stars like Didier Drogba in its history, and in the summer of 2024, it welcomed the renowned coach Roberto De Zerbi to take the helm.
