Atlético Mineiro (abbreviated as "Galo", English name: Atletico Mineiro) was founded on March 25, 1908, and is a professional football club located in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
In 1927, forwards Said, Jair and Mário de Castro formed the "Evil Trio" attacking combination, leading the team to win the state league championship. In 1929, the club won its first international match, defeating Vitória de Setúbal from Portugal 3-1 at the Estádio Antônio Carlos, which became the home ground for the next twenty years.
In 1950, the team moved to the Independência Stadium and began its first European tour in the same year. From 1952 to 1956, the team won the state league championship five times in a row during the 1950s. In 1971, under the leadership of Aldair and Dario, the team won its first Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title, earning qualification for the 1972 Copa Libertadores but failed to advance.
In 1992 and 1997, the team won the Copa Sudamericana twice, marking its early significant international honors. However, due to management issues, the club's financial situation deteriorated, leading to relegation to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B in 2005. In 2006, the team returned to the top division as Série B champions, and the following year won the state league championship again. In 2011, Cuca took over and initiated a new glorious period. In 2012, Ronaldinho joined, and the team achieved an unbeaten record to win the state championship, finishing as runners-up in the Série A and qualifying for the Copa Libertadores.
In 2013, the team defeated Olimpia to win its first Copa Libertadores title and finished third in the FIFA Club World Cup the same year. In 2014, they won the Copa Sudamericana and the club's first Copa do Brasil title. The year 2021 marked a peak year as the team won the Série A championship for the first time in 49 years, followed by a 6-1 aggregate victory over Athletico Paranaense to win the Copa do Brasil. In 2022, they won the Supercopa do Brasil by defeating Flamengo in a penalty shootout. In April 2024, the team won the Campeonato Mineiro for the fifth consecutive year, marking the third time in the club's history achieving this feat, the last being 42 years ago from 1978 to 1982.
