Newcastle Jets Football Club, also known as "Newcastle Jets" (English: Newcastle Jets), was founded on August 1, 1999, and is a professional football club located in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
In the early years of the A-League, the club experienced frequent changes in coaching staff. In the 2005-06 season, Richard Mooney was the coach, and Nick Theodorakopoulos took over the following year. Due to not winning a single match in the pre-season cup and the first seven rounds of the league, he became the first A-League head coach in the club's history to be fired. His assistant, Gary van Egmond, took over and was subsequently re-appointed.
The 2007-08 season was a turning point. The Jets defeated the Queensland Roar 3-2 in overtime in the semi-finals, reaching the grand final for the first time. They ultimately defeated the Central Coast Mariners, winning their first A-League championship and earning a spot in the 2009 AFC Champions League. After the championship, the team faced a player exodus, with captain Joel Griffiths joining Beijing Guoan on loan. In the 2008-09 regular season, the team only won 4 games and finished at the bottom. Champion coach Graham Arnold left, and former technical director Branko Čulina took over as head coach.
After 2009, the club faced financial difficulties and was unable to pay salaries on time. Football Australia provided short-term assistance. In 2010, businessman Nathan Tinkler acquired a majority stake in the club, introduced affordable ticket prices, and brought in new sponsors. The team defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy, featuring Beckham, 2-1 in November 2010. However, the financial problems were not completely resolved, and in 2012, Tinkler planned to relinquish the club's participation rights, but an agreement was reached for him to continue holding the stake.
In 2011, Čulina was fired, and Graham Arnold returned as coach to rebuild the squad, signing former England international Emile Heskey. However, the team failed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive years. In 2015, the Football Association terminated the club's qualification, and a new license was subsequently issued. In 2016, the club was acquired by Shenzhen Leman Group of China.
