Team Introduction

Pohang Steelers Football Club (abbreviated as "Pohang Steelers", in English: Pohang Steelers) is a professional football club based in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It was established in 1973 under the name "Pohang Iron and Steel Company FC" and initially operated as a semi-professional club. In 1984, it became a professional club and was renamed "POSCO Dolphins". In 1985, it was renamed "POSCO Atoms", and in 1995, it changed its name to "Pohang Atoms" to strengthen its local ties. In 1997, it was officially named "Pohang Steelers."

In 1986, they won their first league championship and consistently ranked in the top four of the K League from 1985 to 1998. They won the Asian Champions Cup twice in 1997 and 1998. In the early 2000s, they struggled at the bottom of the standings for a time, but in 2004, they won the first stage of the K League championship, losing in the final on penalties to Suwon Samsung Bluewings. In 2007, Pohang Steelers, finishing fifth in the regular season, defeated several teams in the playoffs, including the regular season champions Seongnam Ilhwa, to win the league title, and in 2008, they won the FA Cup, earning qualification for the AFC Champions League in 2009.

In the 2009 AFC Champions League semifinals, they defeated Qatar's Umm Salal and won the final against Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad. In the same year, they finished third in the FIFA Club World Cup, defeating Mexico's Atlante in a penalty shootout. They won the Korean FA Cup twice in 2012 and 2013, and claimed the league title again in 2013. In 2021, they reached the AFC Champions League final but finished as runners-up to Al-Hilal. In 2023, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary by defeating Jeonbuk Hyundai to win the FA Cup, ending a ten-year drought in cup competitions. In 2024, in the renamed Korean Cup final, they defeated city rivals Ulsan Hyundai 3-1 after extra time, winning the cup for the second consecutive year.
