Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Football Club, abbreviated as "Jeonbuk Hyundai" (Korean: 전북 현대), is a professional football team based in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, South Korea. It was established in 1993 under the name "Wansan Meerkats" but went bankrupt due to financial issues. In 1994, with the support of local businesses, it joined the K League under the name "Jeonbuk Buffalo" but disbanded again after the season. In December of the same year, Hyundai Motors took over and reformed the club as "Jeonbuk Dragons," later renaming it Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The K League recognizes it as a different club from the previous two teams.
In July 2005, Choi Kang-hee was appointed as head coach, leading the team to its first Korean FA Cup victory that same year. Although the team finished 11th in the K League in 2006, they won their first AFC Champions League title and finished fifth in the FIFA Club World Cup. They won the K League title in 2009 and 2011, and were runners-up in the AFC Champions League in 2011. A training center was completed in 2013, and they won consecutive K League titles in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, they won the AFC Champions League again, but were penalized with point deductions and lost their qualification for the 2017 AFC Champions League due to a referee bribery scandal. From 2017 to 2021, they achieved five consecutive K League titles, and in 2020, they won the Korean FA Cup, becoming the first domestic double champions.
In 2022, the team lost the K League title but won the FA Cup; in 2023, they finished fourth in the league (the worst since 2008) and lost in the FA Cup final, missing out on the new AFC Champions League elite competition. In 2024, they finished tenth in the league, facing relegation for the first time in club history, but ultimately secured their place through the relegation playoff. In December 2024, Uruguayan coach Gustavo Poyet was appointed, and in the 2024-25 season, they won their first match in the AFC Champions League second tier 4-0 against Port FC from Thailand, with new signing Andrea Compagnon scoring two goals.
