FC Twente, abbreviated as "Twente", was founded on April 14, 1965, and is located in Enschede, Overijssel, Netherlands. It is a professional football club in the Netherlands. The club is often referred to internationally as Twente Enschede. It was formed by the merger of Enschede Sport Club and Enschede Boys.
The team's most glorious season was 1973-74, when they competed with Feyenoord for the Dutch championship. Although Feyenoord ultimately won the match 3-2, the team still qualified for the UEFA Cup. In the 1974-75 season, the team reached the final of the UEFA Cup but was defeated by the Bundesliga team Borussia Mönchengladbach.
In 2002, the team fell into financial difficulties and declared bankruptcy, but their performance remained strong. The team reached the final of the KNVB Cup in 2004 and finished fourth in the Eredivisie in the 2006-07 season, earning a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. In the 2009-10 season, under the guidance of coach Steve McClaren, the team won the Eredivisie title, becoming the first British manager to lead a Dutch team to a national championship since Bobby Robson in 1992.
In the 2014-15 season, the team faced financial difficulties again, leading the Royal Dutch Football Association to deduct 3 points from the club. The club president, Mantes, resigned as a result, and the Dutch FA intended to relegate them to the Eredivisie, but after an appeal, the FA revoked this decision. In the 2017-18 season, the club finished at the bottom of the Eredivisie and could not avoid relegation.
