Vaasa VPS (short for Vaasan Palloseura), established on September 26, 1924, at a café in Vaasa, is a professional club based in the city of Vaasa, Finland.
The club participated in the inaugural league in 1930 and won the championship twice in the 1940s (in 1945 and 1948), marking its first golden era. After being relegated in 1977, it spent a long time away from the top tier, and when the Veikkausliiga was established in 1990, it was only in the third tier. From 1991 to 1994, under the guidance of a Polish coach, the club was promoted twice, returning to the top tier in 1994.
In early 1995, the team performed poorly and was close to relegation, leading to a change in management for survival. After bouncing back in 1996, they finished first in the relegation group. In 1997, new signings helped them secure second place, and after finishing second again in 1998, they lost the championship due to selling key players and the departure of the head coach. Following financial tightening after 1999, their performance declined, and they were relegated in 2002. In 2005, under the leadership of Ari Piyokela, they won the Ykkönen promotion playoff and returned to the top tier. After their return, their performance fluctuated, but they made a comeback to the top tier in 2021, finishing eighth in 2022, and ending 2023 with a winning streak to secure third place, followed by a fifth-place finish in 2024, indicating a continued recovery.
