Hellas Verona Football Club, commonly known as "The Mastiffs", was founded in 1903 by students of the "Scipione Maffei" high school. Initially competing with local teams, it was renamed "Hellas Verona" after merging with Verona FC in 1919. Located in Verona, in the Veneto region, it is a professional football club in Italy, nicknamed "The Mastiffs."
Joined the Serie A professional system in 1929, and was promoted to Serie A for the first time in the 1957-58 season. The 1972-73 season saw a classic 5-3 victory over AC Milan, and in the 1975-76 season, they reached the Coppa Italia final for the first time.
The 1984-85 season was miraculous, as the team won the Serie A championship with 15 wins, 13 draws, and 2 losses. This is the only top-flight league title in the club's history, with key players including Briegel and Elkjaer. In the 1980s, the team reached the Coppa Italia finals twice, and their best performance in European competitions was reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1988.
The club was restructured in 1991, relegated to Serie C in 2007, returned to Serie B in 2011, and was promoted to Serie A in 2013. In the 2019-20 season, they finished ninth in Serie A, and during the 2021-22 season under coach Tudor, they defeated Lazio and Juventus to avoid relegation. In January 2025, the club was acquired by an American private equity firm.
