The Chile national football team (abbreviated as "Chile", in English: Chile national football team) was established in 1895 and is managed by the Chilean Football Association.
The best performance in the World Cup was achieved during the 1962 home tournament, when the team successfully won third place. During the 1990 World Cup qualifiers, the team faced severe penalties due to the "fake injury withdrawal" incident: in an away match against Brazil, goalkeeper Roberto Rojas claimed he was hit by a firework thrown by fans, causing the match to be interrupted. However, FIFA's video review confirmed that he had fabricated the injury, ultimately ruling that the Chilean team had committed fraud, resulting in a ban from participating in the 1994 World Cup.
The 1998 World Cup marked another peak for the Chilean team since 1962, as they advanced to the Round of 16 thanks to the striking partnership of Zamorano and Salas, ultimately being eliminated by the defending champions Brazil. The team experienced a low period until returning to the World Cup stage in 2010, where they advanced from the group stage but were once again defeated by Brazil in the Round of 16. In the 2014 World Cup, Chile, placed in the 'Group of Death', caused an upset by defeating the defending champions Spain to advance to the knockout stage, where they fought hard against the host nation Brazil in the Round of 16 but lost in a penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Bravo's outstanding performance earning recognition in the international football community.
In 2015, Chile won their first title by taking advantage of home ground and winning in a penalty shootout. The following year, they successfully defended their title by defeating Argentina again in a penalty shootout in the final of the Copa América Centenario. The team had an inconsistent performance in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, finishing sixth in the South American zone after a 0-3 loss to Brazil in their final match, thus losing their qualification. In the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, they finished in seventh place, missing the World Cup finals for two consecutive tournaments.
