Northampton Town Football Club (commonly referred to as "Northampton") was founded in 1897 and is a professional football club based in Northampton, England.
Due to the area's long-standing shoemaking tradition, the team is nicknamed the "Cobblers". Their home kit features maroon and white colors. The club has a traditional rivalry with Peterborough United, and the matches between them are fiercely contested.
Northampton has historically spent a long time in the lower tiers of English football, having briefly competed in the top division during the 1965/66 season. The team has also had memorable performances in cup competitions, such as the FA Cup match against Manchester United in 1970, where they lost 2-8, but George Best's six-goal performance became legendary, and after the match, Northampton players even signed the football used in that game.
The team was promoted to League One as the third-place team in League Two in the 2022-23 season. The club experienced a financial crisis and a change of ownership in 2015, and then won the League Two title in the 2015-16 season.
