Sporting Braga, abbreviated as "Braga", was founded on January 19, 1921, and is a sports club located in the city of Braga, Portugal. The club not only has football but also many other sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, billiards, petanque, boxing, esports, futsal, karate, mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, swimming, taekwondo, and volleyball.
Until 1945, the team wore red jerseys similar to Benfica, but the following year, the team changed to a red and white color scheme. There are two theories regarding this change: the first is at the request of club president José Antunes Guimarães, and the second is at the request of Hungarian coach József Szabo, who asked the president to change the jersey to an Arsenal-style red and white color scheme. In the second year after changing the jersey, the team won the championship in the second division and was promoted to the first division for the first time.
In the 2009-10 season, under the leadership of head coach Domingos Paciência, the team achieved its first league runner-up in history and made its debut in the UEFA Champions League. They then defeated Sevilla in the fourth qualifying round to advance to the group stage. In the following years, although the team reached the finals of the UEFA Europa League, they unfortunately did not lift the trophy.
Under the leadership of José Peseiro, the team won its first La Liga title in 2013, and then in 2016, they won the Portuguese Cup against Porto in a penalty shootout, claiming their first Portuguese championship in 50 years. In 2020, the club reappointed head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who had left 14 years prior. He once again led the team to the league final, but unfortunately could not win the championship.
