Team Introduction

Daejeon Citizen Football Club (abbreviated as "Daejeon Citizen", Korean: 대전시민축구단) is a professional football team based in Daejeon, South Korea, competing in the top tier of South Korean football, K League 1. Established in 1997, it is the first community-owned club in South Korea, not owned by any company, and joined K League for the first time in the same season.

In 1997, Daejeon Citizen became the first community-owned professional football team in South Korea, finishing seventh in the K League in its debut season. In 2001, the team won the Korean FA Cup, earning its first qualification for the AFC Champions League, but finished last in the league. In 2002, the team moved to the World Cup Stadium, receiving government funding to continue its operations, finished second in the AFC Champions League group stage, but still ended up last in the league, leading to the resignation of the head coach.

In 2003, after Choi Yun-kyung took over as coach, the team finished sixth in the league, achieving the best result in the club's history, and Daejeon was named a "Football Special Zone." In 2007, the team reached the K League playoffs for the first time, but in 2008, they finished second to last, marking the end of their golden period. In 2013, the team was relegated, and after being promoted in 2014, they were relegated again the following year, subsequently competing in the lower leagues for a long time.

In December 2019, Hana Financial Group acquired and renamed the team to Daejeon Hana Citizen. In 2022, the team was promoted back to K League 1. At the start of the 2025 season, they performed strongly, sitting at the top of the league table, and young player Yoon Doo-young set a record transfer to Brighton in the Premier League.
