Team Introduction

The Ecuador national football team (abbreviated as "Ecuador", English name: Ecuador national football team) was established in 1925 and is managed by the Ecuadorian Football Federation.

Although the Ecuador national football team is not a traditional powerhouse in South America, it has carved out a place in international football thanks to its unique geographical advantages. The team's home ground is located at an altitude of nearly 2,800 meters, where the thin air makes it difficult for visiting players to adapt quickly, significantly increasing their physical exertion. This environmental advantage has helped the team achieve remarkable home results in World Cup qualifiers, earning them the nickname "Highland Killers" and has often aided in their advancement to the World Cup finals.

The team's best historical performance was achieved in the 2006 World Cup, when Ecuador surpassed Poland and Costa Rica, advancing to the knockout stage alongside the host nation Germany, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time, ultimately losing 0-1 to England in the knockout stage.

On the eve of the 2022 World Cup, the team was embroiled in a nationality controversy, as the Chilean Football Association accused Ecuadorian player Byron Castillo of falsifying his birth certificate, altering his actual Colombian nationality to Ecuadorian, which allowed him to illegally represent Ecuador in 8 World Cup qualifying matches. FIFA initiated an investigation on May 12 of the same year, but ultimately ruled to terminate the investigation on June 10, confirming Ecuador's qualification for the World Cup.
