IFK Göteborg, commonly known as "Göteborg", was founded on October 4, 1904, and is a football club located in Gothenburg, the capital of Västra Götaland County in Sweden.
As one of the traditional powerhouses of Swedish football, this blue and white team has won over 15 domestic top league championships and more than 5 Swedish Cup titles, and has twice claimed the UEFA Cup in 1982 and 1987, becoming the only club in the Scandinavian Peninsula to achieve this honor.
In 1908, they won the Swedish Masters Cup for the first time. After winning the Swedish Football Allsvenskan for the first time in 1935, Gothenburg gradually established its status as a powerhouse. The 1980s and 1990s were the club's golden era, where they dominated domestically and achieved remarkable success in Europe. In 1993, they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, overcoming giants like Manchester United and Barcelona.
Gothenburg has produced many legendary stars, such as Swedish football pioneer Philip Johanson, Gunnar Gren, a member of the "Gre-No-Li" trio, and Stefan Pettersson from the golden generation of the 1980s. The club has a broad fan base in Sweden, particularly in the Gothenburg area, where it enjoys over 50% support. Since the new century, their performance has fluctuated, but Gothenburg remains an important force in Swedish football. After winning the league in 2007, the club lifted the Swedish Cup again in 2008, 2013, and 2015, continuing the glorious tradition of a century-old powerhouse.
