Team Introduction

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense (abbreviated as "Grêmio", English name: Grêmio FBPA) was founded on September 15, 1903, and is a Brazilian professional football club located in Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

On March 6, 1904, Grêmio won their first match 1-0 against the Porto Alegre Football Club, claiming the Wanderers' Trophy. On July 18, 1909, they achieved a 10-0 victory over Internacional, marking the beginning of a fierce rivalry that continues to this day, known as the "Grenal". In 1911, Grêmio won their first Porto Alegre Football League championship, and in 1921, they secured their first state championship.

In 1911, the team defeated the Uruguay national team 2-1. In 1950, they became the first foreign club to play at the Maracanã Stadium, winning 3-1 against Flamengo. In 1959, they defeated Boca Juniors 4-1, becoming the first foreign team to win at the Candy Box Stadium. The year 1983 was the peak of the club's history, as they first defeated Peñarol to win the Copa Libertadores, and then won the Intercontinental Cup 2-1 against Hamburg, with Renato Portaluppi scoring all the goals in the Intercontinental Cup. The club has won a total of 43 Gaúcho Championship titles, 2 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles, 1 Campeonato Brasileiro Série B title, and 5 Copa do Brasil titles, earning them the title of "Kings of the Cup". Additionally, they have 1 Copa Sudamericana and 2 Supercopa Sudamericana titles among other honors.

In 1991, they were relegated to Série B for the first time, but returned to Série A the following year. In 2004, a bankruptcy of their partner company led to a debt crisis and another relegation. In 2005, during the "Battle of Aflitos", 17-year-old Anderson scored the winning goal, earning promotion as Série B champions. In 2017, they defeated Lanús in the Copa Libertadores final, lifting the trophy for the third time, with Luan being named the tournament's best player. In 2021, affected by the pandemic and recruitment issues, Grêmio was relegated for the third time, but returned to Série A in 2022 after winning the Gaúcho Championship.

In December 2022, it was announced that Luis Suárez would join the team, attracting global attention. In 2023, Suárez made his debut with a hat-trick, helping the team win the Supercopa Sudamericana. In the same year, they finished second in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, securing a spot in the 2024 Copa Libertadores.
