The club faced financial issues in the late 1970s and early 1990s. In 1992, Hannover's performance earned them their first DFB-Pokal title, helping to secure stable financial conditions. The team's lowest point was being relegated to the Regionalliga Nord for two years from 1996 to 1998.
Hannover 96 won the German Football Championship in 1938 and 1954, and lifted the DFB-Pokal in 1992, becoming the first team to win the title in the 2. Bundesliga. The club has also won the 2. Bundesliga championship three times and reached the quarter-finals of European competitions twice.
