TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, founded in 1899, is a football club based in Hoffenheim, a village in Sinsheim, Baden-Württemberg. It was formed from the merger of the gymnastics club Hoffenheim Gymnastics Association and the Hoffenheim Football Association.
The club was originally established in 1899 as a gymnastics club and was officially renamed Hoffenheim Football Club in 1945. In 2000, the team was promoted to the Bundesliga after finishing fifth in the fifth tier of German football, and with the financial support of alumnus and software tycoon Dietmar Hopp, Hoffenheim quickly ascended through the German football leagues, reaching the Bundesliga top tier in 2008.
The 2007-2008 season was the team's first season, and due to their outstanding performance, they automatically promoted to the highest level of German football, the Bundesliga, after finishing second in the 2. Bundesliga. In the 2017-18 Bundesliga season, the team had a successful season, finishing third and automatically qualifying for the next year's UEFA Champions League.
