Galatasaray Sports Club (abbreviated as "Galatasaray", English name: Galatasaray) was founded on October 1, 1905, and is a Turkish sports club located in the European side of Istanbul. In October 1905, Ali Sami Yen, a student at Galatasaray High School, founded the club with his friends.
In their first match, the club defeated Kadi Koy FRC, and early on, they were referred to by spectators as the "Gentlemen of the Galata Court" after defeating the Rum Club, which ultimately established "Galatasaray" as the club's name. Before professionalization, they had already won the Istanbul League championship ten times. After the professionalization of Turkish football in 1952, they won the championship three times in the first professional league. Since the establishment of the Turkish Super League in 1959, the team has remained in the league and has won the championship multiple times, having won the Turkish Super League 25 times, the Turkish Cup 19 times, and the Turkish Super Cup 17 times, all of which are the most in Turkish football history.
The club has several key milestones in its development. It was founded in 1905, but due to the lack of a club law in the Ottoman Empire, it could not be officially registered until the Club Law was enacted in 1912, granting it legal status. The team colors have also changed several times; initially, red and white were chosen, but due to harassment from the authoritarian government for matching the colors of the revolutionary flag, the colors were temporarily changed to yellow and blue. In 1908, red and yellow were established as the new team colors.
