The Bundesliga era began in 2016, and RB Leipzig remained unbeaten in the first 13 matches of the 2016-17 season, breaking the record for the longest unbeaten streak by a promoted team in Bundesliga history. On April 15, 2017, they defeated SC Freiburg, becoming the first Bundesliga team to qualify for European competition since German reunification, and the first team from former East Germany to qualify for European competition. On May 6, 2017, they defeated Hertha BSC, securing qualification for the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League.
