Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club (abbreviated as "Wolves", English name: Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.) was founded in 1877, and its full name is Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. It is commonly referred to as "Wolves" by fans and is a professional football club located in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England, nicknamed "Wolves". The club was originally named St. Luke's Football Club and officially changed its name to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1879. Since 2016, the club has been owned by the Chinese conglomerate Fosun International.
In its early years and golden era, the club won the FA Cup for the first time in 1893 and again as a second division team in 1908. Under the management of Stan Cullis from 1950 to 1960, the club reached its peak, winning the top league championship three times (1953-54, 1957-58, 1958-59) and the FA Cup twice (1949, 1960). In the 1950s, the club was instrumental in promoting the establishment of the European Cup through floodlight friendly matches and was once hailed as the 'World Champions'.
After being relegated in 1965, the team returned to higher divisions, finishing as runners-up in the inaugural UEFA Cup in 1972 and winning the League Cup twice in 1974 and 1980. The financial crisis in the 1980s saw them drop to the fourth tier, but they gradually recovered, making their Premier League debut in 2003 only to be relegated the following year. They won the Championship again in 2009 to return to the Premier League, experiencing further ups and downs.
In the 2017-18 season, they won the Championship to return to the Premier League, finishing 7th in the Premier League in the 2018-19 season to return to European competition, and reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in the 2019-20 season. In recent years, they have consistently been mid-table in the Premier League, and in late 2024, they appointed Vítor Pereira as head coach, continuing to compete in the top league.
