Team Introduction

Rotherham United Football Club (commonly known as "Rotherham"), founded on January 1, 1870, is a professional football club based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England.

The club was formed in 1925 by the merger of two local teams: Rotherham Town, established in 1870 and briefly played in the Football League, and Thornhill, founded in 1877, which later changed its name to Rotherham County and joined the Football League in 1919.

The team has experienced multiple promotions and relegations throughout its history, having won the Northern Section Division Three title in the 1950-51 season, reached the League Cup final and finished as runners-up in the 1960-61 season, and secured the Division Four and League One runners-up positions in the 1988-89 and 2021-22 seasons respectively. Rotherham United has frequently moved between League One and the Championship, with the most recent promotion occurring in the 2021-22 season when they finished as runners-up in League One.

The club has also won the league title twice and has been deducted points multiple times due to financial issues, but has consistently demonstrated a strong ability to recover. In May 2022, captain Richard Wood signed a one-year contract extension, marking his ninth season with the team.
