Team Introduction

The Malta national football team (abbreviated as "Malta", English name: Malta national football team) was established in 1948 and is managed by the Malta Football Association as a national-level football team.

The team has long been at the bottom of the FIFA rankings, currently ranked 161st as of September 2024. The squad mainly consists of players from the domestic league, with a total market value of approximately €9.55 million. The Malta team has never qualified for the World Cup or the European Championship finals in its history. In the 2023 European Championship qualifiers, they faced consecutive defeats against strong teams such as England and Italy.

In the 2024 UEFA Nations League D Division, they achieved a rare victory by defeating Andorra 1-0. After entering the 2025 World Cup qualifiers, the team suffered defeats to Finland and Poland, and experienced a heavy 0-8 loss to the Netherlands. In the first six matches, they failed to score a single goal, conceding 10 goals. It wasn't until September, in a match against Lithuania, that they managed to secure their first point in the qualifiers with a 1-1 draw. Malta has participated in World Cup qualifiers since the 1970s but has never advanced beyond the preliminary stage.
