Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (abbreviated as "Sundowns", English name: Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies F.C.) was established in the early 1960s, originally as the Sundowns Football Club, founded by young people living in Mamelodi and surrounding areas in Pretoria, South Africa. It officially joined the South African Professional Football League in 1967.
In 1985, Zola Mahobe became the owner, and the team successfully promoted from the second tier of South African football that year. In 1986, they won the South African Mainstay Cup. In the 1987-88 season, they won the South African Premier Soccer League championship for the first time. In 1988, Mahobe was arrested for embezzling funds from Standard Bank of South Africa, and the bank took over the team, which was later acquired by the Krook brothers. They reclaimed the South African Premier Soccer League title in the 1992-93 season and achieved a league three-peat from the 1997-98 season to the 1999-00 season.
In 2003, Dr. Patrice Motsepe invested in the Sundowns club and completed a 100% takeover in 2004, the same year the team was renamed Mamelodi Sundowns. They won the South African Premier Soccer League championship for two consecutive years in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. In the 2013-14 season, they secured their 9th South African Premier Soccer League title. The 2015-16 season marked the beginning of the Pitso Mosimane era, where they reached the CAF Champions League final, winning their first African championship in club history. In 2017, they won the African Super Cup.
Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi served as co-coaches from the 2020-21 season to the 2024-25 season, helping Mamelodi Sundowns become the dominant force in the South African Premier Soccer League, winning five consecutive league titles.
