Manchester United Football Club (abbreviated as "Man Utd", English name Manchester United F.C.) was founded in 1878, with the full name Manchester United Football Club. It is commonly referred to by fans as Man Utd and is a professional football club located in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, nicknamed "The Red Devils". Its predecessor was Newton Heath LYR Football Club, which changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. The club's former home was in Clayton, Manchester, and it moved to Old Trafford Stadium in 1910, where it has been ever since.
In the early Busby era, the club won its first top-flight league title in 1908 and lifted the FA Cup for the first time in 1909. In 1945, Matt Busby took over as manager and created the "Busby Babes", winning back-to-back league titles in 1956 and 1957. The Munich air disaster in 1958 resulted in the deaths of eight players, after which the club was rebuilt around the core of Best, Law, and Charlton, becoming the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968.
After Ferguson took office in 1986, this period is known as the Ferguson dynasty. They won their first Premier League title in 1993, achieved the "treble" (Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League) in the 1998-99 season, and topped the top league 20 times before Ferguson retired in 2013, winning a total of 38 trophies during his tenure, including 13 league titles and 2 Champions League titles.
In the post-Ferguson era, multiple managerial changes led to fluctuating results. In the 2016-17 season, Mourinho led the team to win the Europa League, making them one of the teams to have won all three major European competitions. In the 2022-23 season, Ten Hag led the team to win the League Cup. The 2024-25 season saw a poor performance, finishing 15th in the league (the worst since 1974), and losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Manchester United, with 20 top league titles, 13 FA Cups, and 3 Champions League titles among their main honors, is one of the most influential traditional powerhouses in English football. The "Manchester Derby" and the "North West Derby" against Liverpool are renowned in the football world.
