Racing de Santander, abbreviated as "Santander", was founded on June 14, 1913, and is a professional football club located in the city of Santander, in the Cantabria region of Spain.
The club was one of the founding members of La Liga in the 1928–29 season, and although it finished last that season, it was not relegated. The team's best historical achievement was finishing as runners-up in La Liga in 1931.
Between 1938 and 1973, due to regulations prohibiting the use of non-Spanish names, the club was renamed Real Sociedad Deportiva Santander. Racing Santander has participated in 40 La Liga seasons, with the last being the 2007–08 season. After finishing 20th in the 2011–12 season, they were relegated to the Segunda División.
