VfL Wolfsburg, established in 1945, is a German professional sports club based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, nicknamed "Wolves". It was formerly known as BSG Volkswagenwerk, a factory team affiliated with an automobile manufacturing plant.
In 1970, Wolfsburg achieved their best result, finishing second. With this achievement, the club entered the promotion play-offs for the Bundesliga but performed poorly in the matches and failed to advance. Wolfsburg played as a third-tier team in the amateur Northern League. They won the championship consecutively in 1991 and 1992, and subsequently succeeded in the promotion play-offs, allowing the club to advance to the 2. Bundesliga in the 1992-93 season.
In the 2008-2009 season, under the leadership of Magath, they won their first Bundesliga title, which is their greatest success. During this season, Wolfsburg equaled the longest winning streak in a single Bundesliga season. After the winter break, they achieved ten consecutive victories and became the only team in Bundesliga history to have two forwards each scoring more than 20 goals in a single season.
