Sporting de Gijón, commonly known as Sporting Gijón, was founded on July 1, 1905, and is a professional football club based in Gijón, Asturias, Spain.
In its history, the team achieved its best performance in La Liga during the 1979/80 and 1980/81 seasons, and was the runner-up in the Copa del Rey twice, in 1981 and 1983. Sporting Gijón is renowned for its excellent youth training system, having developed many outstanding players, including David Villa. The club's legendary goal scorer Enrique Castro 'Quini' and goalkeeper Ablanedo hold several club records.
The team has experienced multiple promotions and relegations in its history, having been promoted to La Liga in the 2007/08 and 2014/15 seasons. In June 2022, the Mexican Olegui Group completed the acquisition of the club, ending the Fernández family's 28-year control.
