The club was originally named "Barnsley St. Peter" and nicknamed "The Tykes". The club's most significant achievement in its history was winning the FA Cup in 1912. Barnsley has primarily competed in lower leagues, and was promoted to the Premier League in 1997, but was relegated after only one season.
