Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club (abbreviated as "Western Sydney", in English: Western Sydney) was established on April 4, 2012, and is a professional football club located in the Western Sydney region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
The Popovic era is the golden period of the club. In the 2012-13 season, the team's first A-League season started slowly but quickly rose, winning the regular season championship with a record unbeaten streak and qualifying for the AFC Champions League, with Popovic being named the league's best coach. In the 2014 AFC Champions League, they defeated Guangzhou Evergrande and Seoul FC, and in the final, they won 1-0 against Al-Hilal, becoming the first Australian team to win the AFC Champions League title.
In October 2017, Popovich resigned to join a Turkish team, leading the club to frequently change coaches in the period that followed. After Josip Gombau took over, the team finished seventh in the 2017-18 season and was dismissed at the end of the season. He was followed by former German international Markus Babbel, who was sacked in January 2020 due to poor performance. Jean-Paul de Marini took over as interim head coach but was dismissed in October 2020. Welshman Carl Robinson then took charge but was ultimately also dismissed due to poor results.
In June 2024, club president Paul Leidler was dismissed, and Jefferson Cheng took over, with Alan Stasić appointed as the new head coach, while all members of the original coaching staff left. During the off-season, the team made roster adjustments, with several players including Daniel Maguș and Dony Gerdich leaving, and Bulgarian international Bozhidar Kraev signed from Wellington Phoenix, along with goalkeeper Jordan Holmes joining the team.
